Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Human trafficking is a serious human rights violation that affects millions of people worldwide, including in Nigeria, where it is driven by poverty, inadequate law enforcement, and organized crime (Ogunjimi & Abdulrahman, 2023). The Nigerian Constitution and various legal instruments provide safeguards against trafficking, yet the practice persists due to weak enforcement, lack of awareness, and insufficient protection for victims. This study aims to examine the role of constitutional law in combating human trafficking in Gusau Local Government Area (LGA), Zamfara State, analyzing how legal provisions can be better implemented to curb this crime.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite constitutional provisions and laws against human trafficking, including the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act, human trafficking remains a significant issue in Gusau LGA. This study will investigate how constitutional law is being used to combat human trafficking in the area, the challenges involved, and how legal measures can be strengthened to protect victims and deter traffickers.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of constitutional law in addressing human trafficking in Gusau LGA.
To identify the challenges in enforcing constitutional safeguards against human trafficking in Gusau.
To recommend improvements in the legal framework to combat human trafficking in Gusau LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How effective is constitutional law in combating human trafficking in Gusau LGA?
What are the primary challenges in enforcing constitutional provisions against human trafficking in Gusau?
What legal reforms can improve the fight against human trafficking in Gusau LGA?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₁: Constitutional provisions against human trafficking are inadequately enforced in Gusau LGA due to weak institutional capacity.

The findings will inform policy and legal reforms aimed at improving the enforcement of laws, protecting trafficking victims, and enhancing Nigeria's fight against human trafficking.
